How To Style Basics

One of my most requested topics to discuss in women's fashion is how to grow your closet and how to style basic pieces. This can seem intimidating at first, but you don't need to accomplish a full wardrobe overnight. Take your time with curating pieces that you know to be timeless and match your style. Below are suggestions to building a classic wardrobe. The great part about this list is you can customize any of the pieces to really reflect who you are when it comes to your style.

Coats/Layers:

  • 1 Blazer
    • Choose your favorite style (plaid, stripe, solid and/or fitted, oversized, boyfriend)
  • 1 Jean Jacket
    • Choose your favorite style (distressed, oversized, fitted, etc)
  • 1 leather jacket
    • Choose your favorite style (oversized, color, cropped, etc.)

Tops:

  • 1-2 plain solid tops for the Spring/Summer
    • Tank tops, graphic tees, plain tees, simple blouses
  • 1-2 plain solid top for the Fall/Winter
    • Turtlenecks, sweaters, long sleeve tees
Bottoms:
  • Well Fitting Jeans in black and whatever blue wash you prefer
    • Any style that you think flatters you the most
  • A black skirt
    • Mini, Midi, Maxi
Shoes:
  • Black, brown, and white shoes for year round or per 2 seasons
    • Booties for Fall/Winter
    • Sandals/Mules for Spring/Summer

Styling basics is the most powerful knowledge you can have when creating a sense of style. In this YouTube video, I style the above pieces into a ton of options. The outfit opportunities are endless, but I tried to show 3-4 outfits per bottoms.

Once you build a foundation outfit (using basics), the interest needs to come from accessories, hair, or make up. I try to have 1-2 interesting moments in an outfit to really make it pop. An example of this is a fun hairstyle like bubble braids and a cute pair of earrings. Another example would be a statement hat with bold make up. This way, your outfit doesn't stay basic and really gets elevated into your style.
